TIN Meets CAD - Extending the TIN Concept in GIS
نویسندگان
چکیده
Extending the current “2.5D” terrain model is a necessary development in GIS. Existing 2D surface information must be extended to 3D, while trying to preserve the topological integrity. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) on the other hand is often fully 3D, which may be excessive for our “extended 2D” mapping needs. We have used the “boundary representation” (brep) design from CAD systems, based on manifold models, to address these problems. Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) models of the terrain surface are well known in Geographic Information System (GIS), but are unable to represent cliffs, caves or holes, which are required to represent complex buildings. The simple TIN b-rep structures may be extended using formal Euler Operators to add simple CAD functionality while guaranteeing the connectivity required for terrain modelling. We believe this provides a simple and reliable extension that is sufficient for many applications.

متن کاملIntegration of Terrain Models and Built-up Structures Using Cad- Type Euler Operators
Until recently terrain models were developed in a GIS, and built-up structures were modelled using a CAD system. Extending the current “2.5D” TIN model by incorporating CAD functions is a necessary development, while preserving topological integrity. A solid-modelling CAD system may be excessive for our “extended 2D” mapping needs, but the CAD “boundary representation” (brep) design, based on m...
متن کاملThe Implementation of Object-oriented Tin-based Subsystems for Gis
This paper focuses on the development of an object-oriented Triangular Irregular Networks (TINs) subsystems for GIS. It reviews the current development of 3D GIS which includes a discussion of the needs, demands, and related modelling and structures for a system. In the third section of the paper, we discuss the concept of object-oriented modelling and specific modelling for the TIN approach. T...
متن کاملAn Original Way of Building a TIN with Complex Urban Structures
Geographical Information System (GIS) software often models a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) by using triangulations (TINs). Computer Aided Design (CAD) is then used to model complex city structures and superimpose them on the TINs. Since the terrain surface is not connected to the built-up structures, no further spatial analysis (for example, neighbourhood analysis, flow modelling) is possible. B...
متن کاملBuilding Reconstruction Using Lidar Data
Within the GIS world, LIDAR becomes an important and convenient data source. Many researchers are developing algorithms to extract a bare-earth model and building boundaries from LIDAR data. This paper presents two different methods for building reconstruction using LIDAR data. The first is a traditional method using filtered LIDAR data and combining cadastral building boundaries data (for exam...
